Frequently asked questions

Five things people ask most often. If your question is not here, the contact page has the right address to write to.
Who can use UniSell, and why do you ask for my UTD email?
UniSell is limited to people who can receive mail at an @utdallas.edu address and who are 18 or older. When you sign in we email a one-time code to that address; you type the code back to prove you control the inbox. We never ask for your NetID password, and you should never enter it anywhere on this site.
Please be clear about what this does and does not prove. It shows someone had access to that inbox at that moment. It is not a background check, an identity check, or proof of current enrollment — staff and alumni may also hold UTD addresses. Treat every trade with the same care you would use with a stranger.
Is UniSell run by the University of Texas at Dallas?
No. UniSell is an independent, student-built marketplace. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or operated by The University of Texas at Dallas, and it is not an official university service. UTD’s name, logos, and trademarks belong to the university; we use the name only to describe who the site is for. The university has no responsibility for trades arranged here, and campus policies still apply to anything you do on university property.
How does payment work? Does UniSell hold my money?
It does not. UniSell lists items and connects buyers with sellers — that is all. We do not process payments, hold funds in escrow, take a commission, arrange shipping, or offer buyer protection, refunds, or purchase guarantees. You and the other person agree on payment directly and settle it between yourselves, usually in person.
Because of that, a dispute over an item or a payment is between you and the other party, and any refund is handled by you or by whatever payment app you chose. Never send a deposit, gift card, cryptocurrency, or a verification code to “hold” an item, and never accept an overpayment you are asked to send back. Those are the most common scams we see.
What can I list, and what happens if someone breaks the rules?
List lawful personal belongings you actually own — textbooks, furniture, electronics, clothing, bikes. Use your own photos, describe any damage honestly, and wipe your personal data off any device before you hand it over. Prohibited items include weapons, drugs, alcohol, vaping products, prescription items, stolen or counterfeit goods, animals, identity documents, account credentials, and academic cheating services such as exam answers or unauthorised course material. The full list is in the safety and rules page.
Every listing has a “Report listing” button. Reports go to a human administrator who can remove the listing, suspend the account, or both, and each action is written to an audit log. Do not put unnecessary personal details in a report. If you are ever in immediate danger, call 911 first — reporting to us is not an emergency service.
How do I delete my listings, my account, or my data?
You can remove any listing yourself from “Your listings”, which hides it from the marketplace immediately. Note that removing a listing hides it — it does not by itself erase the stored record or the uploaded photo from our database.
For full deletion of your account and associated data, or to request a copy or correction of what we hold, email the address on the contact page from your UTD address so we can verify the request. We may need to keep certain records where the law, an open dispute, or a security investigation requires it. The privacy policy explains what is stored and for how long, and the cookie policy covers what your browser keeps locally.
